New Frontier- Was based on youthful optimism, it basically created the Peace Corps and worked to improve education and health care.
Peace Corps- A federal agency that was created to promote voluntary service by Americans in foreign countries and to provide labor power for developing countries to improve health care, educational systems, and other parts of their societies.
Apollo- Was the program that landed Apollo 11 on the moon on July 20, 1969.
Berlin Wall- A guarded barrier built between East Germany and West Germany to stop East Germans from migrating into West Germany. The wall was created in 1961 and was destroyed in 1989.
European Economic Community (EEC)- An area in west Europe that was created by the Treaty of Rome, it was also known as the "Common Market" and it eventually included 27 members by 2005.
Bay of Pigs invasion- Cuban exiles were to invade Cuba to overthrow Fidel Castro and were to receive American air power, this plan, however, failed.
Cuban missile crisis- John F. Kennedy and Nikita Khrushchev were fighting over nuclear weapons being installed in Cuba aimed at the United States. This almost caused a nuclear war.
Freedom Riders- Groups of mixed-race people who rode interstate buses into the South to protest racial segregation.
Voter Education Project- The effort of the SNCC and other civil rights groups to register the South's black population.
March on Washington- A civil rights march where Martin Luther King Jr. said his "I Have A Dream" speech.
Civil Rights Act of 1964- Banned racial discrimination in public facilities and gave the federal government more power to fight segregation in schools, it also prohibited employers from discriminating based on race when hiring workers.
Affirmative Action- Projects that were paid for with federal funds could not discriminate based on race in their hiring practices.
Great Society- Known as the successor of the New Deal, the Great Society focused on extending prosperity to all people in the American society.
Freedom Summer- Was a campaign that involved thousands of black and white civil rights worker, saw the murders of three workers, committed by white racists.
Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party- Was a political party that challenged Mississippi's delegation to the Democratic National party's platform, demanded to be seated at the convention but were denied.
Voting Rights Act of 1965- Prohibited ballot-denying tactics (literary tests and intimidation) and tried to make racial disenfranchisement explicitly illegal.
Black Panther Party- Was the organization of black militants formed in Oakland, California to protect black rights.
Black Power- Rejected Martin Luther King's pacifism and integration, they promoted pride in African heritage.
Six-Day War- Was a military conflict between Israel and Syria, Egypt, and Jordan. In the end, Israel won and gained territories however, the territorial disputes caused conflict.
Stonewall Rebellion- An assault by off-duty police officers at a gay bar in New York caused a rise in activism and militancy within the gay community.
Students for a Democratic Society (SDS)- Was a campus-based political organization founded in 1961 emerging during the civil rights, antipoverty, and antiwar movements. The society was aimed at the promise of "participatory democracy."
