Lecompton Constitution- Was Kansas's proposed constitution; its ratification was rigged to allow slavery, but was voted down by Congress.
Bleeding Kansas- A civil war in Kansas over slavery, eventually merged with the national Civil War.
Dred Scott v. Sandford- The Supreme Court decided that slavery had extended federal protection and slaves were not citizens.
Panic of 1857- Was economic crisis caused by bank failures, high grain prices and Andrew Jackson curbing over speculation on western lands.
Tariff of 1857- Was created due to high surplus and Southern farmers, lowered duties on imports.
Lincoln-Douglas debates- Were a series of debates between Lincoln and Douglas during the Senate race in Illinois, asked the Freeport question.
Freeport question- Was a question asked during the Lincoln-Douglas debates, questioned whether the Court or the people should decided the future of slavery.
Freeport Doctrine- Stated that slavery cannot exist without laws to protect it and the Supreme Court was to have final say, this was a response to the Freeport question.
Harpers Ferry- Arsenal that was stolen by abolitionist John Brown, caused a lot of commotion in the South.
Constitutional Union party- Was a party composed of moderate Whigs and Know-Nothings.
Confederate States of America- The seven Southern states that seceded from the union and was joined by four more states.
Crittenden amendments- An attempt to appease the South; the failed Constitutional amendments would give protection to slavery in territories south of 36 degrees and 30`.
