Taft-Harley Act- Was an anti-union legislation that banned the closed shop and other strategies that allowed unions to organize.
Operation Dixie- Was an effort to unionize southern workers, focusing on textile factories.
Employment Act of 1946- Declared that the economic policy should aim at promoting maximum employment, production, and to keep inflation low.
GI Bill- Helped soldiers to return to civilian life by giving loans to purchase homes or farms and set up small businesses and paid for tuition so the soldiers could go to college.
Sunbelt- A fifteen state crescent that saw population growth during WWII.
Levittown- Were mass-produced tract houses in New York and Philadelphia for middle-class families
Baby Boom- A period of mass births after WWII, expanding universities and schools.
Yalta Conference- Was a conference between the Big Three leaders(Franklin Roosevelt, Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin) to talk about dividing Germany and territorial concessions to the Soviet Union.
Cold War- Diplomatic tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union for 45 years, international conflicts were caused because of this tension.
Bretton Woods Conference- Western allies met to talk about a postwar international economic order to avoid crises such as the one in WWII.
United Nations (U.N.)- Formed to prevent further world wars and was more successful and realistic than the League of nations.
Nuremberg War Crimes Trial- Proceedings against former Nazi leaders for war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Berlin Airlift- Was a mission to provide food and supplies to West Berliners after the Soviets cut them off from access.
Containment Doctrine- Declared that the Soviet Union and communism were expansionists and needed to be stopped by using military and political pressure,
Truman Doctrine- Was a pledge of support for anyone fighting against any communist/communist inspired threat.
Marshall Plan- Was a transfer of money to help rebuild Western Europe and to bolster capitalist and democratic governments.
North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)- Was created by Western European powers and the U.S. and Canada to defend against the Soviet Union threat.
House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC)- Was created to expose communist influence in American government and society.
Fair Deal- Was an extensive social program that extended old-age insurance under the Social Security Act.
National Security Council Memorandum Number 68 (NSC-68)- Recommended quadrupling defense spending and rapidly expand peace-time armed forces to deal with the Cold War tensions.
Korean War- North Koreans invaded South Korea before being counterattacked by UN Forces, ending in stalemate in 1953.
