Fort Sumter- The location where Confederate forces fired the first shots of the Civil War in April of 1861.
Border States- Were five slave states that did not secede during the Civil War and Lincoln stated that the war was about preserving the union and not abolishing slavery(border states are in yellow).
West Virginia- A part of Virginia that formed its own state after breaking away from Virginia, most residents did not own slaves, so they were against the Confederacy.
Trent affair- Britain was going to enter the Civil War after a Union warship stopped a British steamer and arrested two Confederate diplomats.
Alabama- Was a Confederate warship built by the British.
Laird rams- Were two well-armed ironclad warships that were built by the British for the Confederacy.
Dominion of Canada- Was a unified Canadian government created by Britain to protect Canada form the United States.
writ of habeas corpus- A petition requiring law enforcement officers to provide detained individuals before the court to check the legality of the arrest.
New York draft riots- Riots that mainly consisted of Irish-Americans that were against the draft.
Morrill Tariff Act- Caused duties to be increased to raise revenue for the Civil War.
greenbacks- Was paper currency issued by the Union Treasury and fluctuated in price.
National Banking System- Was a network of member banks that were able issue to currency against government bonds.
Homestead Act- Stated that settlers got 160 acres for $30 if they lived on it for five years and improved it.
U.S. Sanitary Commissions- The government trained nurses and collected medical supplies to help the Union Army.
