Peninsula Campaign- When General George McClellan failed to seize Richmond, the Confederate Capital.
Merrimack- Was a Confederate ironclad that fought with the Monitor.
Monitor- Was a Union ironclad that fought with the Merrimack.
Second Battle of Bull Run- Another Civil War battle that gave Robert E. Lee a victory.
Battle of Antietam- A battle that ended in a tie, but showed that the Union army was strong, allowing Lincoln to issue the Emancipation Proclamation.
Emancipation Proclamation- Stated that all slaves in rebelling states to be free but slavery in non-rebelling Border States was allowed.
Thirteenth Amendment- Prohibited all forms of slavery, former Confederate States had to ratify the amendment before entering the Union again.
Battle of Fredericksburg- Where Robert E. Lee repelled a Union attack.
Battle of Gettysburg- A decisive win for the Union that never allowed the Confederates to invade the North again. Later, Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address.
Gettysburg Address- Abraham Lincoln's speech at the cemetery at the site of the Battle of Gettysburg.
Battle of Fort Henry and Fort Donelson- A win for Ulysses S. Grant that allowed the north to hold onto Kentucky.
Battle of Shiloh- A Union victory that saw 23,000 soldiers die.
Siege of Vicksburg- A two month siege on a Confederate fort that fell to Ulysses S. Grant.
Sherman's march- Where General William Tecumseh Sherman marched with his men through Georgia.
Congressional Committee on the Conduct of War- Was established by Congress to oversee military efforts under the control of Radical republicans.
Copperheads- Were Northern Democrats who attacked Lincoln, the draft and the emancipation.
The Man Without a Country- A book written by Edward Everett Hale about a treasonous soldier living in exile.
Union Party- Was a party consisted of pro-war Democrats and Republicans during the 1864 election.
Wilderness Campaign- Several clashes between Ulysses S. Grant's and Robert E. Lee's armies in Virginia.
Appomattox Courthouse- The place where Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant.
Reform Bill of 1867- A bill that granted suffrage to all male British citizens.
