Popular Sovereignty- Created by Stephen Douglas, it allowed settlers to choose whether or not the territory was slave or free. The Free Soil Party wanted the territories to become free.
Free Soil Party- Was an anti-slavery party in 1848 and in 1852 during the elections. They opposed the extension of slavery during popular sovereignty.
California gold rush- Where thousands of miners traveled to Northern California when the discovery of gold was found.
Underground Railroad- A network of volunteers that helped slaves escape from the South and into Canada.
Seventh of March Speech- Daniel Webster's address to urge the North to support the Compromise of 1850, stating that it will prevent slavery in the territories acquired from the Mexican Cession.
Compromise of 1850- Allowed California to become a free state and opened New Mexico and Utah to popular sovereignty.
Fugitive Slave Law- This law was passed as a part of the Compromise of 1850 and set high penalties for anyone who aided slaves to escape.
Clayton-Bulwer Treaty- The treaty stated that Great Britain and the United States were to protect the neutrality of Central America.
Ostend Manifesto- Was the proposal to purchase Cuba from Spain, but was abandoned after it was leaked out.
Opium War- Was a war between Britain and China over trading rights, mainly because of how Britain wanted to keep selling opium to the Chinese.
Treaty of Wanghia- Allowed America to trade with China.
Treaty of Kanagawa- This treaty ended Japan's economic isolation, allowing America to trade.
Gasden Purchase- Additional land that was bought from Mexico for $10 million and was used to help a southern transcontinental railroad.
Kansas-Nebraska Act- Stated that slavery was to be decided by popular sovereignty in the Kansas and Nebraska territories.
